I spent the month of February, 1955, when my C-119's starboard prop
reversed pitch on take-off. We survived by the skin of our teeth and it
then took 30 days until replacement prop regulators could be sent from
Texas. We had no money and only our flight suits and were stuck in the
transient aircrew billets. Could not leave the base and had to beg for
cigarettes!

Very cool! I just ran across this. I was born at Tachikawa Air Based in
1957, my dad was stationed there (Richard Brown). Sadly he passed away last
year, I bet he'd love to have seen these old photos!

I loved Tachi!! Bit of a culture shock when we first arrived in Japan.
Disembarked the SS President Roosevelt in Yokohama in '64 then base bus to
Green Park, where I wandered this amazing unground city, including the base
theater & commisary, for a week, then to Tachikawa, where more treats
awaited in the form of the movie theater and the giant East-side,
ex-factory crammed with an amazing choice of everything a teen would want!
Lived in #2942 off the "Loop" near the Teen Club!

Another classic shot is at 5:04. I mean nothing else in the sky looks like
it. Some kind of mechanical flying dinosaur. Douglas had a hell of a run
with sucessful & popular a/c thru the '30's & 40's. But their luck ran out
somewhat w/the C133, but still, what a plane.

Автор yokota69 ( назад)
maybe it was a generals plane and they kept it polished

Автор yokota69 ( назад)
yes you could always hear those engines going 24 hours a day. of course i
remember those noisy brakes on the c 124 . to this day i cant sleep unless
i have a box fan making noise to go to sleep because of living around the
noise of planes

Автор kolbpilot ( назад)
Also, it's hard to make a C 97 look good, but the shot at 6:43 is, as they
say, most impressive.

I'm enjoying watching your various videos. Tachikawa looks like it was a
magical place back then & in other ways not (I'm sure the maintenance crew
busted butt on those piston monsters). But man, what classic aircraft
graced that field.

Barry, thanks , i have sent you a email to your you tube account to email
me direct.
