@meccaturbo Actually, it is the ex-Nickel Plate Road line from Chicago to
Buffalo

great video!!!

Actually, it depended on the location. From New York to Buffalo, for
example, you had the NYCentral, the Erie, the lackawanna, the Lehigh Valley
and the Pennysylvania. Other places, not so much. From New York to Philly
it was the Pennsy and a combo of Jersey Central plus the Reading.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Different railroads provided different routes and levels of service and
schedules. Railroad competion was not quite the same as airlines, where you
might have 6 companies flying between the same two locations, that really
didn't happen much with railroads.

Автор danielchance ( назад)
okay, I have a question: With all of these railroading companies that had
steam in the golden age of rail, was it like selecting an airline to fly
with now a days, meaning, you got a better deal going with Union Pacific
than Norfolk and Western- so that's who you went with, or was it just a
matter of who got to your station first, and who had seats?

nice

Автор nicholasbreeden ( назад)
yeah you are right...i htink i posted that at 1 in the morning simetime
three moinths ago...but yea...the regular brakes would do just fine in
stopping that train...but they also have a diesel there to generate
electricity for the passenger cars...seein as how they don't run the gens
anymore

Автор Nick K ( назад)
It wouldn't do any harm to the regular brakes if the diesel wasn't there,
they did it all the time in steam days and even into diesel days. However,
the dynamic brakes are used on long descents. The diesel is also there as
protection, in case something happens to the steamer, the diesel can take
over and get the train to the next siding, instead of blocking the main.

Автор nicholasbreeden ( назад)
that's not what they use diesels for on these trains...the diesels are
there for dynamic breaking because if you had a train going that fast that
heavy and they used the regular breaks they would burn the break shoes off
before they stopped the train.

I volonteer at The Indiana Transporatation Museum where the 587 is at. She
is under a rebuild, and will be done in early 2010 or 2011.

Автор Daniel Arnold ( назад)
can anyone give me the names of the passenger cars on this train?

Автор WhyAyeMann ( назад)
If the 1218 ran at top speed carring 5 miles of loaded freight like it used
to in its frieght days, not even the toughest and strongest man alive could
not help but to soil his pants.

Автор leejax01 ( назад)
Very rare to see a solo steamer on an excursion train...there is usually a
diesel some where around to share some of the load and to help preserve the
unit...and that was no small train either considering. Great video.

The 1218 and 611 also tripleheaded with Southern 4501 out of Chattanooga.

Автор Hendo56 ( назад)
I rode behind the 611 and 1218. As you say, the young turks at NS and CSX
put a stop to steam programs. It's amazing that UP still has one. NS really
restored two first gen diesels, though, for promo events. But I doubt we'll
ever see steam again. Sad.

Автор jongodwin ( назад)
Indeed, I remember about 10 or more years ago I saw a boxcar in the local
NS yard with some rather unique graffiti. It said, and I quote, "Norfolk
Southern sucks for stopping the steam program." My dad was there and siad,
"only a railfan would write something like that." It was classic.

Автор nscarlcamp ( назад)
its true we'll probably won't see the 611 or the 1218 out and running,
reasoning, insurance, someone got hurt the last time the 611 came through
in 1994, plus Goode wasn't a big fan of steam, on the other hand, Wick
Moorman is, so who knows....

Автор Sam Malott ( назад)
Nice to see and hear the N&W PAIR even on video.I lived on the cin.line
during my childhood and saw all the different N&W steam and you have not
felt the ground shake till you have a Y get stuck with a coal drag

Автор drglinski ( назад)
I do believe it's a Mallet.

Автор joekrepps ( назад)
Not a "challenger" - that would be a 4-6-6-4 arrangement. 1218 is 2-6-6-4.
Nice video. That's a lot of zoom for '91. I've seen the real thing in
northwestern Va.. I miss it.

Автор Trainman11185 ( назад)
cool 22 cars the challenger is powerful

Автор navmark77 ( назад)
Man that's a long train. Nice quality video.

Автор navmark77 ( назад)
Eh? 611 and 1218 were taken out of excursion service in the latter part of
the 1990's. Norfolk Southern CEO David Goode decreed it, as soon as Bob
Claytor was barely out the door.

Автор css9450 ( назад)
Hmmm, looks like the old Sedley Road bridge!

Автор brandon morgado ( назад)
oh for god's sake,611 and 1218 are still running! you must not be thinking
clearly.

Автор whatihave2do ( назад)
I live here in Roanoke and I feel your pain at the Transportation Museum. i
think it's crummy of our city to donate 3 million to the art museum but
won't help out the TPofV. I haven't been there since it moved when I was
little. hope to see the old trains again soon.

Автор Stephen Riley ( назад)
they had people in the baggege car

Автор Paul Cashman ( назад)
Great vid! Loooong passenger excursion train, too! If I were in the front
or rearmost car and the dining car was in the middle, it'd take a half-hour
to get to dinner! :)

Автор amtrakf40 ( назад)
Yup, they did shortly after 1218 entered excursion service and again later,
but that time TRIPLEHEADED with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 #587!

Автор John Rockey ( назад)
Actually, I think they did. I thought I remember seeing a shot in Trains
Magazine from back in the 1980's. Not sure though.

Автор brandon morgado ( назад)
did 611 and 1218 ever had a doubleheader.

Автор PepsiAddict18 ( назад)
Western, I mean

Автор PepsiAddict18 ( назад)
I'm a volunteer at the Transportation Museum and I love seeing 1218, along
with Norfolk and Southern Class J #611.

Автор mjkft22 ( назад)
